Improving Unit Startups to Reduce Cost and Improve Heat Rate: Application Results

This project sought to evaluate the ability of CLPM technology to accurately identify underperforming PID control loops and to assess the effect of PID controller tuning on a plant’s startup operations and heat rate. Analysis was conducted on both a 550-Megawat combined cycle gas-fired unit located in Gilbert, Arizona and a 125-Megawatt combined cycle peaker plant located in Colorado. Analysis was performed at the two facilities between June 2018 and September 2019. It included data from startup and normal runtime operations. Benefits associated with the project included improved startup efficiency, enhanced trip avoidance, and reduced operations and maintenance costs.
