Improving Unit Startups to Reduce Cost and Improve Heat Rate: Enhancing Startup Efficiency through Improved Control Loop Performance

The project assessed the potential benefits of control loop performance monitoring (CLPM) technology relative to the identification of unit and equipment control issues that negatively affect unit startup efficiency and heat rate. The project utilized CLPM technology during numerous unit startups performed at a single combined-cycle unit. It identified issues and associated them with their probable contribution to startup delays and efficiency losses. The results of the project demonstrated how CLPM technology contributed to the identification and evaluation of a range of factors affecting startup efficiency and substantiated the need for further research.
